THERE is a possibility that all the 12 municipal and city councils in Selangor will have new presidents and mayors once the new coalition government is formed.
While no changes are expected to be made at the various district offices, Sungai Pinang assemblyman Teng Chang Khim said, the parties that formed the state government had been empowered to make changes at the municipal and city councils.
“We can make changes for the posts of municipal council presidents and mayors.
“However, we can only decide on this once the coalition government has been formed,” said the former Selangor Opposition leader who was part of a DAP team that won 13 state seats during Saturday’s general election.
He said the post of the state secretary and district officers were government posts and the appointees were considered civil servants.
As for local councillors, Teng said, the new state government had the right to ask for the removal of the existing Barisan Nasional councillors with immediate effect.
“It is very likely that the coalition will appoint their own councillors to the local authorities,” he added. - STAR
