Utusan tops as the most pro-BN paper

(Aliran) The election media monitor initiative, organised by the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ), Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI) and Charter 2000-Aliran confirmed that major print media continue to the line of the incumbent government, formed by the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, in their election coverage by allocating the majority of stories and spaces for their candidates.

The bias toward BN effected a significant amount of news and news spaces being dedicated to BN candidates- their background and what they said, as well as the portrayal of imminent electoral victory for BN. In contrast, issues that are of interest to the voters- analysis of the parties manifesto, the track record of the party etc, issues with the Indian community were given very little space. After the candidates, other main issues covered were chiefly the questions of the new Penang chief minister and attacks on the oppositions.

Among the six newspapers covered- The Star, NST, theSun, Utusan Malaysia, Malaysia Nanban and Makkal Osai - the order of the percentages of space dedicated to pro-BN stories is as follows - Utusan Malaysia at 82%, Malaysia Nanban at 70%, Makkal Osai at 66%, The Star at 63%, NST at 60%, and theSun at 43%. Interestingly, Makkal Osai, which is yet to get a new publication permit for 2008, also has the highest percentage of space for pro-Opposition stories at 23%.

CIJ Executive Director, Gayathry Venkiteswaran said the electoral setback of the BN despite the pro BN media is a strong indicator of the public rejecting the media's propagandist approach and the need to change the editorial policy. She recommeded that the Malaysian media change along three lines- return to the ethical and profesional standards of fairness, objectivity, balance and accuracy, more competition in the form of more media being allowed, and doing away with the laws that restrict the media.

The election media monitoring initiative covered the period from a week before the nomination day until the day of the election. However, for the purpose of the report the results analysed were from the period between 25 Feb- 8 March. Analysis by volunteers are available on http://www.aliran.com/elections..

Attached with the statement is the executive summary of the findings. The full report is available in CDs and to be distributed upon request.

KUALA TERENGGANU (B.harian): Polis menahan seorang lelaki berusia 20-an yang bekerja di sebuah sekolah memandu di Besut, tengah malam kelmarin kerana disyaki terbabit dalam kes hasutan berhubung isu pelantikan Menteri Besar Terengganu yang baru, Datuk Ahmad Said.

The image http://buletinonline.net/images/berita2/natang.gif cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Mengenali Pengkhianat Melayu Umno Di Pulau Pinang

Wassalam

Malaysian opposition slams government's refusal to free Indian lawmaker

The Associated Press

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: A Malaysian opposition party on Saturday condemned the government's refusal to release an ethnic Indian activist elected as a state legislator while in jail.

M.Manoharan — a leader of the Hindu Rights Action Force, or Hindraf — was arrested shortly after his group organized a rally in November in which 20,000 Indians protested alleged government discrimination. He has been held since December under Malaysia's Internal Security Act, which allows for indefinite detention without trial.

While behind bars, he contested the March 8 election as a member of the Democratic Action Party and won a seat in the Selangor state legislature.

Despite Manoharan's win, Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said the government cannot free him because he is still a security threat, The Star newspaper reported Saturday.

Calls to Syed Hamid and his aides went unanswered Saturday.

Lim Kit Siang, who heads the opposition Democratic Action Party slammed the government's decision.

"It shows that the Cabinet is not really listening to the people's voice for change toward a more democratic, accountable, just and more progressive Malaysian society," Lim told The Associated Press.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's ruling National Front coalition retained power in the March election, but suffered the worst losses in its 51-year rule.

Khaled: Bloggers censoring govt feedback to their sites

thestar
JOHOR BARU: Bloggers have been accused of censoring feedback sent by government departments to their websites.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the feedback was aimed at correcting inaccurate statements and false allegations about the Government, which appeared in some of the cyber articles.

He said the Government was not given a chance to explain certain issues to the people.

“There were articles criticising the Government. We also sent in many replies but they were removed by the bloggers,” he said.

Mohamed Khaled said the Government had in the past ignored such articles.

“We made a mistake. The blogs play an important role. The people read and believe what's said in the blogs.

“Now, we are looking at the blogs to respond to them but are prevented from doing so,” he said.

Mohamed Khaled said he would bring up the issue in the next Cabinet meeting. He was at the SM Taman Johor Jaya 1 Parent-Teacher Association meeting yesterday.

He announced an allocation of RM20,000 for the school’s building fund.

Khaled also presented certificates of excellent performance to Tien See Yah, who scored 10As in the 2007 SPM examination, and a model student, Looi Zhen Siang.

now the news ...

Penang plans to scrap vehicular ferry service
Star
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) will scrap the vehicular ferry service between Penang island and Seberang Prai once the expansion of the Penang Bridge is completed in September next year.

PPSB chief operating officer Mohd Niana Merican Abd Kadir Merican said the remaining four vehicular-cum-passenger ferries would continue to operate despite suffering operating losses.

He said the company also planned to operate a speedboat ferry service as it was cheaper and efficient.

“The speedboat idea was mooted three years ago. Travel time between the island and mainland on speedboats will only take eight to 10 minutes compared with 20 minutes using the ferry,” he told reporters at the launching of free tuition classes for 141 of the port’s staff members at Wisma Perkeso in Seberang Jaya yesterday.

PPSB, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Finance Ministry after its corporatisation on Jan 1, 1994, has been incurring an annual loss of RM12mil operating the ferries. It also manages the port.

Mohd Niana said the company was losing about RM200 on each ferry trip, adding that the operating cost was RM600 while revenue collected was RM400.

He said the bridge would have three lanes on each side and a special motorcycle lane when the expansion work was completed.

“It will be able to accommodate the huge traffic volume and as such, we will be able to scrap the vehicular ferry services and reduce our losses,” he added.

In November last year, PPSB held talks with the ministry to take over the maintenance of ferry services. PPSB chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Ibnihajar said then that it had requested for fuel subsidy and buying of catamarans to complement the ferry services.

Ahmad also said the Government should emulate Hong Kong where the municipality handled maintenance while the port management focused only on giving better services to port users.

He had also said that PPSB had to fulfil its social responsibility and could not simply increase the ferry fares to recoup losses.

Khir Toyo penulis blog

kosmo
SHAH ALAM - Bekas Menteri Besar Selangor, Datuk Seri Dr. Mohamad Khir Toyo (gambar) kini menjadi seorang penulis blog.

'Saya ingin tahu pembunuh Noritta'

kosmo
SHAH ALAM - "Walaupun saya bebas, namun saya sendiri ingin tahu siapakah pembunuh sebenar Noritta."

Biasa lah .... Malaysia boleh. Ada kuasa, ada wang.....semua aku punya.

Pengarajan kepada semua. Sosial, terlalu bebas, selingkuh, kuasa politik, rasuah .... banyak pengajaran beb.

Mansuh sistem kuota – Dr. Mahathir
