Chinese woman claims she lost RM6m

Sun2surf - [...] The wealthy 50-year-old owner of a travel agency, who has Singapore permanent resident status, lodged a report in the Ampang district police headquarters last Thursday (May 8), claiming she lost the money in several handouts she made to her Dutch boyfriend in Amsterdam and a friend of African descent here.

Ampang police chief ACP Abdul Jalil Hassan said today according to the woman's report, she lost almost all the cash to her Dutch boyfriend when she met him in China, and later in Amsterdam and Singapore over the past several months.

He said that when the woman could not locate the Dutchman, she went looking for him in several countries and when she returned to Singapore, a man of African descent she was acquainted with there told her that he had seen her boyfriend in Malaysia.

Trusting the man, she came to Malaysia and put up in a hotel in Ampang in search of her boyfriend.

Police said she claimed the man also offered to help her make money by coaxing her into contributing to a scam, typically infamous among Nigerians where the victim is asked to pay large sums of cash to withdraw supposedly stagnant and unclaimed funds amounting to tens of million dollars kept in the World Bank...selanjutnya [KLIK DI SINI]

Wives of Penang assemblymen, MPs take PBT issue to RoS

sun2surf - The wives of the new government's assemblymen and MPs will be filing a formal request with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) regarding the status of Persatuan Bunga Tanjung issue (PBT) tomorrow.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who announced this during a press conference today, declined to divulge further details except that the wives of the assemblymen and MPs will hold a press conference about it.

As for PBT ex-president Puan Sri Chui Kah Peng's allegations that Lim had insulted and demean women by his statement "leave the poor lady alone", Lim responded that it was just an English expression which means "don't make it hard for her".

"There is nothing derogatory about it. I think they know what I mean," he said.

Lim also read out transcripts of what he had said on that day to prove his point:

"Maybe we need the former Chief Minister to clarify. I do not want to mention Puan Sri. She may not be familiar with the rules required to follow. I do not want to blame her. She may get advice from the adviser. Otherwise, why do we need advisers? I don't think we should go for the poor lady. Let's leave the poor lady alone."

Altantuya's dad handed handwritten notes to cops

sun2surf - Altantuya Shaariibuu’s father Shaariibuu Setev handed four notes handwritten on sheets of a Hotel Malaya memo pad to investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan on June 25, 2007, a week after the murder trial began, the court heard today.

Tonny, who is the prosecution’s 75th witness, said Shaariibuu handed the four handwritten notes and an envelope to him outside the courtroom on June 25, last year.

According to Setev, Altantuya’s cousin Amy had found the letter and envelope in Altantuya’s bag, said Tonny, adding that he spoke to Setev through an interpreter.

Tonny said he sent the note to the Chemistry Department for a handwriting analysis to be conducted the very next day.

He said the Chemistry Department returned the analysis report, the four memo sheets and the envelope to the police on June 28, 2007.

Earlier, Tonny told the court how he, Supt Amidon Anan from the Crime Scene Investigation Department and photographer L/Cpl Rozaimi went to Hotel Malaya on May 29, 2007, to view the tapes, which contained images of two of the accused, C/Insp Azilah Hadri and Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar.

Penang education director stops DCM from distributing spectacles to poor students

Sun2surf - Last year, prescription spectacles were distributed to poor students in several Tamil schools without a glitch but when the state executive councillor for education tried to carry on with the programme now, he was stopped from doing so by the state Education Department.

Dr P. Ramasamy, who is also the deputy chief minister II, informed the state Education Department of his intentions to distribute spectacles to 223 pupils from 11 Tamil schools in Seberang Perai Utara.

"We planned to do it on May 12 during school hours in a Tamil school in Jawi so that it is easier for the pupils to turn up and receive the spectacles," he said.

However, the department told Ramasamy they are not allowed to go ahead with the programme during school hours.

"They told us that it would disrupt the schooling hours of the pupils so we should not organise it during school hours," he told a press conference today.

"It is ridiculous to expect us to organise this after school hours because these pupils may not have transportation then and they are all from poor families."

Ramasamy said he is not going to let this rest as he plans to write in to the department to appeal and set another date to distribute the glasses.

"It doesn't make sense that last year, Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon, who was the executive councillor for education then, could distribute spectacles during school hours but this year, we are not allowed to do it," he said. more....

It’s ‘our’ money, not yours

sun2surf - TWENTY-EIGHT days before Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo was unseated as Selangor mentri besar, he asserted that the Selangor Economic Development Corporation (PKNS) was a private company and that its money and assets do not belong to the people.

At a pow-wow over lunch with this writer and his colleagues, he charged: “You wrote that the fine paid by PKNS was people’s money. No, PKNS is a private company.” (For the record, PKNS was imposed fines totalling RM330,000 for illegal clearing of land around the Bukit Cahaya Agricultural Park and at all material times, Mohd Khir was its chairman.)

Then he made a remarkable statement: “The fine goes back to the state coffin! (I’m sure he meant “coffers” but those at the lunch looked stunned when he used the word a second time). The money comes back to us.” Not wanting to argue with someone who has little knowledge of where the fines imposed by a court of justice end up and not wanting to give him a free lesson in financial procedures, I reserved my comments.

Today, PKNS is in the news again. Here’s a summary of what it paid out to Balkis, the organisation of wives of state assemblymen and MPs in Selangor.

• RM218,719 for the opening ceremony of Komplex Wawasan Balkis;

• RM200,000 for the Balkis dinner;

• RM10,000 for a table at the same dinner; and

• RM161,660 for programmes organised by Balkis.

"Meanwhile, it is learnt that Abdul Khalid had in his letter to the ROS on Wednesday (April 23) said of the amount in Balkis’ accounts, about RM850,000 was donated by state government companies – Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd which gave RM268,862 last year and Perbadanan Kemajuan Negri Selangor (PKNS) which contributed RM590,379.50 between 2006 and 2007.

It is understood that Abdul Khalid is also investigating the transfer of 43,560sq ft of land in Section 7, Shah Alam, which the state government had in 2002 offered to Balkis at a nominal cost of RM250,000 (RM5.74/sq ft) for the setting up of a shelter home for women that cost RM5 million." - sun2surf

Khir Toyo siap lah kamu...

Teng Chang Kim has audience with Selangor Sultan

Sun2surf - Sungai Pinang assemblyman Teng Chang Khim had an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in Istana Bukit Kayangan today, further fuelling talk that he will be the next speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.

Teng, a fourth-term assemblyman, declined to confirm if his meeting with the Sultan was over his impending ascension to the post when the legislative assembly sits end of this month.

Teng, a practising lawyer, was opposition leader of the assembly from 1995 to 1999 and from 2004-2008.

Met outside the palace gates at 12.15pm, about one and the half hours after he arrived at 10.50am, Teng said: “I sought an audience with the Sultan and we had a good conversation about various matters, including how to develop Klang and its historic heritage.”

Asked if the audience with the Sultan had anything to do with his impending duty as assembly speaker, Teng said: “The speaker is actually elected by the state assembly and not appointed by the Sultan.

“The Sultan can voice his opinion, but Tuanku is not interfering with the appointment of the speaker because according to the constitution, his job is to select the Mentri Besar and to appoint the executive councilors selected by the Mentri Besar,” he said. more...
