Man held with 99 passports

IPOH: The Immigration Department arrested a man in Lahat near here for having 99 passports belonging to 89 Myanmar and 10 Bangladeshi immigrants.

National enforcement director Datuk Ishak Mohamed said that the 55-year-old man was arrested at the office of his foreign workers outsourcing company at 10.30am yesterday after a tip-off from the public.

Ishak said the man had no right to keep the passports and would face legal action from the department pending investigation.

“Only two parties have the right to keep passports.

Not accepted: Ishak showing one of the Burma Refugees Organisation cards at a press conference in Ipoh on Sunday.
“One is the legitimate owner of the passport and the other is the employer. In this case, he is neither,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

The suspect, said Ishak, had admitted to managing the foreign workers on behalf of five outsourcing companies here, which is an offence.

The man had even issued so-called Burma Refugees Organisation (BRO) cards to the foreign immigrants.

The cards supposedly allow them to work here.

“The BRO cards and any other refugee-related cards are not recognised by the department,” said Ishak.

The operations of the five outsourcing companies have been suspended.

Ishak also said three other Myanmar workers, all in their 20s, were arrested during their operation.

“One of them did not have legal documents and the other two misused their working passes,” he said.

Meanwhile, eight factory workers have been detained for possessing fake MyKads in Kamunting on March 13.

Ishak said four were picked up at a house in Taman Mas here and the others at a nearby factory.

Kedah official papers missing
thestar.com.

ALOR STAR: All documents from the offices of the Mentri Besar and executive councillors in Kedah have gone missing.

The PAS-led government which took office after 12th general election on March 8 will lodge a police report based on the findings of an internal investigation.

Mentri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak has appointed state executive councillor Phahrolrazi Zawawi to investigate the case of the missing documents.

“Phahrolrazi will investigate what happened.

“I do not want to accuse people without proof,” said Azizan who found that the Mentri Besar’s office was void of documents after the swearing-in ceremony last Sunday.

The newly appointed executive councillors, who were sworn in on Wednesday, found out the next day that their offices were also empty.

“There is not a single paper left in all the offices. We view this very seriously because the documents belong to the executive council, not to any individual,” said Phahrolrazi.

He said most of the documents were classified.

“We are questioning the government officers on duty. No one has a right to transfer the documents without permission,” he said.

Phahrolrazi said the former executive councillors did not have the right to enter the offices without permission.

“We need the minutes of the meetings to check the progress of projects and other matters that were discussed at the executive council meetings,” he said.

Pulau Pinang: There are signs lately that the Malay Rights Action Force (MALRAF) is trying to garner support from terrorist groups, the police charged yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said MALRAF has also set up a fund by misleading the public into believing that the money is to finance its activities.

“We view such matters very seriously. It is also very worrying especially when we live in a multi-racial society.

Ominous words: The front page of Thursdays edition of Singapore’s The New Paper which interviewed UMNOputera and quoted him as saying that MALRAF will not rule out violence.

“The police will not hesitate to take stern action against anyone to ensure that peace and security prevails in this country,” he said.

Musa also said the group was trying to sow hatred towards the Government and that its actions could spark racial clashes.

He said such dangerous sentiments were being widely spread via MALRAF forums, distribution of books and leaflets, on websites as well as through the short messaging service.

“It is also trying to rope in gangsters to prevent local authorities from demolishing illegal surau, mosques and “kedai burger tepi jalan” in the near future"

“The fanning of such racial sentiments among the Malays is very unhealthy and dangerous,” Musa said, adding that the police would not hesitate to invoke the Internal Security Act (ISA) against those who abused technology to stoke racial hatred or unrest.

The IGP said those found guilty of spreading such messages through SMS or e-mail could be jailed up to three years, fined RM10,000, or both, under Section 28 of the ISA.

One of MALRAF leaders, UMNOputera bin Dibayar KJ, was reported as saying in an interview in Thursday’s edition of Singapore’s New Paper that that he would not rule out using violence.

He was quoted as saying that the protest by Bersih and HINDRAF in Kuala Lumpur last November inspired MALRAF’s public protest.

“The rakyat were prepared to die for their cause. I’ve shown slides of rakyats getting tear gassed and “disumbat black maria" during my roadshows and I think it struck a chord with the people"

“I think it’s quite unlikely we’ll head down that path towards a civil war but there’s always that possibility. Some of the uneducated may resort to violence,” UMNOputera was quoted as saying by the paper.

SELEPAS PILIHANRAYA PAK LAH TERPAKSA KEKALKAN SUBSIDI MINYAK

Malaysia to maintain fuel subsidies
Reuters

By Jalil Hamid

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia (Reuters) - Malaysia plans to maintain state subsidies despite record crude oil prices, the country's premier said on Friday, less than a week after leading his party to the worst election disaster in its history.

The election saw a backlash against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's government over rising prices, and the opposition has promised to increase fuel subsidies and scrutinise some of the key development projects his government launched.

But Abdullah, who had spoken before the campaign of a need to reform the subsidies, mainly on fuel and food, said his government would look for alternative ways to tackle the subsidies, which now stand at 43 billion ringgit ($13.6 billion).

"At the moment are not intending to do that," Abdullah said in a interview with Reuters and broadcaster CNBC -- his first with teh foreign media since the March 8 elections -- when asked if he intended to rein in the spending.

"But there will be some other measures that we need to take in not too long a time," he said. Queried further, Abdullah said, "There will be some other formula."

At general elections on March 8, Abdullah's National Front coalition was ousted in five of Malaysia's 13 states and lost the two-thirds majority in parliament it had held for nearly four decades, but secured a simple majority to cling to power.

The multiracial coalition has effectively ruled Malaysia since independence from Britain in 1957.

Malaysia will also keep its ban on offshore trade in the ringgit currency, said Abdullah, who shrugged off a demand for his resignation from predecessor Mahathir Mohamad to be sworn in for a second term on Monday. Continued...

KISAH MAT SABU JUMPA LIM GUAN ENG

Guan Eng enggan keluar RM100 ribu
Abdul Halim Mohd Rashid
harakahdaily

"Dia (Lim) jawab: 'Susahlah, kalau nak pindah kena perbaiki. Terpaksa belanja sampai RM100 ribu.

Arguments over NEP redundant, says SAPP
NST 2008/03/16

A Sabah-based Barisan Nasional party said the New Economic Policy had lapsed in the 1990s and that it was unhealthy for political leaders of different races to be pro or anti the policy based on racial prejudice.

Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee said the NEP had expired in 1990 and was replaced by the National Development Policy (NDP), which was formulated by the National Economic Consultative Committee (NECC) from 1989 to 1990.

"The NECC was formed to formulate a post-NEP policy and I was one of the representatives from Sabah, along with the then deputy chief minister Datuk Ahmad Baharom and leaders from chambers of commerce. The process took a year to complete and the successor to the NEP was the NDP.

"At the Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur last Monday, our party once again highlighted the dangers of racial and religious polarisation and the mixing of religion with politics. There are much bigger issues facing the country than an expired NEP," he said in a statement.

Yong said SAPP had two years ago voiced objections to a proposal by Umno Youth to revive the NEP as it had been "discredited" and that the party preferred to support actions to help weaker sections of society irrespective of race.

The statement by the Penang government to not practice the NEP was redundant as the policy no longer exists, he said.

Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng had said after taking charge of the government that the NEP will not be practiced, drawing criticism from Umno.

Shariff hits out at arrogant Umno reps as cause of defeats
NST (2008/03/16)

Tasik Gelugor Umno division chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar hit out at arrogant and self-interest Umno elected representatives who failed to serve the people as the cause of Umno's defeat in the general election in Penang.
"We have under-estimated the strength of the opposition parties, especially the PKR,” he said. "They capitalised on the weaknesses of Umno leaders.”

Mohd Shariff said it was incumbent of the party members to realise their mistakes and start afresh to help the people.

He was speaking at the Tasik Gelugor Umno division election thanksgiving lunch at Dewan Besar in Sungai Dua near here. Also present was MP for Tasik Gelugor Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

In his speech, Nor said Barisan Nasional is confident of recapturing the state government in the next general election,.
“It is possible for the BN to recapture Penang provided we work hard, strengthen our position and restore the people's confidence," he said.

Opposition parties led by DAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and PAS formed the state government after winning 29 out of the 40 state seats in the recent general election.

"The three state assemblymen and me who have been elected will work for their betterment of the people here,” he said. "I will keep my election promises and will bring federal government projects to benefit the people of Tasik Gelugor.
