Graft cost country RM10 billion a year
sun2surf | Corruption, if left to fester, can cause the country to lose RM10 billion a year in domestic growth.
Pemudah, the government's special task force to facilitate business, gave this cost of corruption statistic in pushing its case for the Anti-Corruption Agency to be given a quick fix and a much-needed shot in the arm to give investors confidence to do business here.
Statistics made available to theSun show the ACA's performance is dismal -- it has only investigated 10.1% or just 7,223 cases out of the total of 71,558 reported between 2000 and 2006.
Pemudah co-chairman Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon told theSun in a recent interview that the statistics and dismal results could pose bigger problems for the country in years to come. “Something must be done fast as the actual situation is a serious cause for concern,” he said.
“The ACA must be given more resources to work with, including an increase in budget by the Government. It is about time to seriously consider recruiting foreign officers to work with the ACA on a contractual basis to solve more cases.”
Yong said World Bank statistics show that corruption can reduce the country’s growth rate by between two and four per cent and this translates to a loss of up to RM10 billion a year.
He said although the ACA is trying to better itself, the figures speak for themselves and paint a gloomy picture of things to come.... selanjutnya.

Negara rugi RM100 billion akibat Rasuah
Kerajaan cuba sembunyi kerugian sebenar akibat rasuah?

Malaysia semakin terkenal .... tahniah Pak Lah
Tahniah Pak Lah .... akhirnya rasuah kita semakin cemerlang, terbilang, tak boleh nak bilang ....
Malaysia has been deteriorating steadily over the past decade in its efforts to reduce corruption, according to a UN report and is a long way off from matching the standards set by Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan, the top three Asian countries who are least corrupt.Ini pula berita di www.lse.co.uk Kita terkenal di mata dunia ... yahooooooo !!!Launching this year’s Asia Pacific Human Development Report published by the UN Development Programme in Kuala Lumpur Thursday (12 June), Transparency International (TI) Malaysia, Ramon V Navaratnam said, according to the International Country Risk Guide (ICRG), “Malaysia’s position has been deteriorating steadily over the last decade from 4.00 in 1966 to 2.38 in 2006.”
This compares with Singapore’s ranking which improved from 4.00 to 4.50 over the same period, making it the least corrupt Asian nation ahead of Hong Kong and Japan. However, both Hong Kong and Japan actually slipped in their anti-corruption ranking from 5.00 to 4.00 and Japan from 5.00 to 3.50 over the same period respectively.... selanjutnya.
Malaysia's corruption at critical level - watchdog
Corruption in Malaysia has reached a critical level as the country falls in international rankings, a graft watchdog announced Thursday, warning the government to act or lose its competitiveness.
The UN's Asia-Pacific Human Development Report highlighted an International Country Risk Guide finding which saw Malaysia decline from a score of 4.00 in 1996 to 2.38 in 2006, with a lower score representing greater corruption.
'It is worrying because it is a business index which reflects on our domestic investment, foreign direct investment and confidence in the economy,' said Ramon Navaratnam, country head of graft watchdog Transparency International.
'Corruption is at a critical level here,' he said.
He said corruption in Malaysia was deeply entrenched in the negotiation of contracts. Bribes were paid to government officials to speed up trade licences, for police protection and for loan transactions.
'Our economic structure, the way we do business here, needs to be reviewed, renewed and redesigned,' Navaratnam said, warning that Malaysia could lose its competitive edge if it remained 'complacent and inefficient.' ...read the rest.

CORRUPTION IS WORSENED IN MALAYSIA
Philippines, Thailand among most corrupt Asian economies: survey
news.my.msn.com
The Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and China are among the most corrupt Asian economies, according to results of a regional poll of expatriate businessmen released Monday.
Singapore and Hong Kong retained their rankings as the cleanest economies, the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC) said.
The annual survey covers only 13 economies in Asia and excludes other countries notorious for corruption, such as Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Some 1,400 expatriates were polled in January and February this year, PERC said.
Corruption remains a problem in the region despite huge economic progress made over the years, with governments generally lacking the political will to tackle the problem, the Hong Kong-based PERC said.
"The Philippines is a sad case when it comes to corruption," the consultancy said in a summary report made available to AFP.
The Philippine situation is "probably no worse than in places like Indonesia and Thailand" but corruption has become politicised and is openly discussed in the media, unlike in authoritarian countries like China and Vietnam, it said.
The Philippines scored 9.0 out of a possible 10 points under a grading system used by PERC under which zero is the best score and 10 the worst.
As in the 2007 survey, Thailand remained the second most corrupt economy after the Philippines with a score of 8.0 after the military, which seized power in a coup in 2006, was seen to have failed to tackle the problem.
"The kingdom's economy has been marking time for two years while it sorts out political problems in which allegations of corruption figure prominently," said PERC.
Indonesia, which ranked behind Thailand with a score of 7.98, has made improvements under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono but the perception of the civil service as one prone to graft remains strong, said PERC.
"International ratings agencies might have improved Indonesia's foreign and domestic currency debt ratings recently, citing the government's efforts to tackle corruption... however, the problem is still very serious," said PERC.
Corruption is also perceived to have worsened in Malaysia, which scored 6.37 in the survey, worse than last year's grade of 6.25, but the country retained its number six ranking in the poll.
Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's failure to carry out his promise to fight graft was one of the key reasons his ruling coalition suffered its worst ever results during last Saturday's elections, PERC said.
"A promise to fight corruption was the main campaign theme that won (Abdullah) a big increase in voter support in the last national elections (in 2004)," the consultancy said.
The pressure is now on Abdullah, who rejected pressure to step down despite the poll setback, to show he is serious about fighting corruption in his second term as prime minister, said PERC.
China's score worsened to 7.98 from 6.29 last year with corruption seen to be as widespread as ever despite Beijing's efforts to clamp down on it.
"The economy is growing so rapidly that even low-level officials are able to amass illicit fortunes.
"The penalties for getting caught might be draconian, but graft is so widespread and the potential rewards so great that people seem to be more than willing to take the risks."
