We are not against freedom of speech

sun2surf| Police today defended themselves against accusation of selective persecution, saying that they are not against freedom of speech as enshrined in the Federal Constitution but are concerned about the safety of the public.

Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar refuted the Bar Council's claim on Monday that they practised double standards as seen in the way they handled two different illegal gatherings on Sunday.

"I will keep it simple. When our orders to disperse fall on deaf ears and are not adhered to, we will move in and act. That is when we may carry out arrests. What then are we expected to do? Stand and watch? We are law enforcers and when we act, it is within the parameters of the law. We will appear silly to the rest of society if we do not act.

"The protesters must remember that not everybody share their emotions, opinions and beliefs and the rights of others must also be respected. The police have a duty to make sure this right of the rest of society is upheld," he said.

He said if the protesters disperse on order, there will be no issues.

He cited the case of the anti-Internal Security Act (ISA) gathering in Petaling Jaya where the group dispersed soon after being told to do so for the first three weekends they got together and none were detained. But in the fourth week, they defied orders and kept regrouping, forcing police to act.... more.

Mentaljog | oh wow! a ‘yes to ISA’ t-shirt? great idea! i salute whoever comes out with it. it’s their rights to wear whatever t-shirt they like… just as i like to wear ‘no to ISA’ t-shirt. how come, though, sometime back, there was this man who was detained by police for wearing an ‘no to ISA’ t-shirt? how come during the anti-ISA vigil, ‘no to ISA’ t-shirts (and also RPK t-shirts) were not allowed?

ok maybe it is a little too premature to talk about the ‘yes to ISA’ t-shirt since this is the first time i came across it… but look at the 2nd picture - a gathering of more than 5 on the public road, obstructing traffic!!

this group of muslim NGOs, 500 of them, mind you!… held a gathering outside their meeting place at wisma sejarah (public place, once it is outside!), then march to the jalan tun razak police station.

WHOAA!! a gathering at a public place and a march? where the hell were the police? where the hell were the light strike action force (riot) police? why the hell none of them were arrested?... more.

Umno buat himpunan, polis tidak pernah ganggu - Anwar

harakah | ....Menurut Anwar, ceramah yang dianjurkan PAS itu diganggu polis sebelum ia sempat dimulakan, dengan menggunakan ratusan anggota Unit Simpanan Persekutuan (FRU) dan polis cawangan khas kerana didakwa menganjurkan himpunan tanpa permit.

"Kita buat ceramah membantah akta yang zalim diganggu polis, tetapi jika Umno buat himpunan, polis tidak pernah ganggu, inikah demokrasi?," katanya ketika mengadakan sidang media di Lobi Parlimen hari ini.

Cops haven’t probed ghost voter allegations

Beliau ketika bangkit mengemukakan soalan tambahan di Dewan Rakyat mempersoalkan siapa sebenarnya menentukan sesuatu aduan itu disiasat ataupun tidak.

Bersih wants Selangor CPO to be suspended

The Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) took to task the Selangor Police Chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar over his “uncalled for remarks” equating participants at Sunday’s vigil to “criminals”.

It said Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar should also take responsibility for the police chief’s comments and suspend him from his duties immediately.

Subang MP R. Sivarasa who acted as spokesman for the group quoted Khalid as having said yesterday: “What would happen if every criminal that we confront starts singing the national anthem?”

“That is inappropriate for a senior ranking officer to make. It is not proper for him to equate the participants at a peaceful gathering with criminals,” Sivarasa said.... selanjutnya.

CPO: Protesters abused sanctity of Negaraku

Sun2surf | ... He refuted claims that police were disrespectful to the national anthem when they moved in on participants of a candlelight vigil as the group was singing the Negaraku opposite the PJ Civic Centre.

He instead accused the protesters of abusing the sanctity of the Negaraku for making use of it to evade action.

"The members of the group sang the Negaraku about three or four times, each time police told them to disperse at the Jalan Timur field and at each place, they regrouped. They were using it to keep us at bay but we had acted within the law. How can I disrespect the Negaraku?

"I am an officer of the Royal Malaysian Police Force and I will be among the first to give honour to the national anthem. But in the best interest of security and order and to keep it in place, the police are empowered to evaluate the situation and act accordingly," said Khalid.

He explained that he did not hear the anthem being sung when his men moved in to disperse the crowd which had violated the law by taking part in an illegal assembly.... selanjutnya.

Parents of attack victim disappointed with cops

MMail | Parents of the SMK Seri Selayang students who had been attacked by a mob of motorcyclists armed with helmets, baseball bats, motorcycle chains and padlocks on Tuesday, have expressed disappointment with police investigations on the case.

The parents were disappointed when told at a meeting in the school with the police investigating officer and school officials yesterday that two suspects taken in earlier had been released.

Also present at the meeting were the parents of the boy who had allegedly called in gangsters to beat up a fellow student after a minor altercation.

According to the parents, they were informed by the investigating officer that the suspects had been released because of lack of evidence linking them to the incident.

The clearly irked parents claimed police are not taking the matter seriously.

One parent said: "My son and the other victim indicated clearly to police (the suspects) and we were told that they have been released. How is that possible?"

Despite expressing their frustration, parents are requesting police to step up patrols around the school area during peak hours.... selanjutnya.

A policeman and two of his friends who claimed to be Bukit Aman policemen were arrested after one of them allegedly punched and threatened a manager at a karaoke lounge in Senawang....

“One of the men stood up and said the karaoke owners did not give him face although they were all from Bukit Aman and that he would make life miserable for them,” said state MCA deputy youth chief Siow Koi Voon yesterday....

The policeman then took out several RM50 notes and threw it on the floor. However, the supervisor took just RM90 and returned the rest to the policeman, said Siow.

“The policeman had repeatedly told the workers that the entire group was from Bukit Aman and that he would act against the lounge if it operated after 1am. He even told the workers to have a good look at his face as he would be back with a vengeance.” - Star

In a written reply to Dr Lo’ Lo’ Mohamad Ghazali (PAS-Titiwangsa), Syed Hamid said the beat base was located in a dirty area where there was a possibility of being exposed to contagious diseases.

Suspects are release but police says 'No cover up'

Nst | The release of a murder suspect within 24 hours after being detained under the Emergency Ordinance was not an attempt at a cover-up, said state police chief Datuk Mohktar Shariff.

"Everything was done according to procedure," he said, referring to the investigations into the murder of MIC state deputy chief and Tenggaroh assemblyman Datuk S. Krishnasamy.

Krishnasamy was shot dead by a lone gunman at the state MIC headquarters in January.

"We are determined to solve the case as soon as possible. This is a priority case as instructed by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan."... selanjutnya.
