10 Internet News Sites to Get Accreditation

redorbit | .... The Information Ministry will issue 10 online news sites with "media tags" which are given to media organisations "acknowledged" by the government.

These are the mainstream and vernacular newspapers, broadcast television channels and foreign wire agencies.

Bloggers, however, will not be given accreditation even if they report socio-political news as their sites are considered personal in nature.

A senior official with the Information Department said the 10 news portals were approved by the ministry's secretary-general and that future additions would have to be vetted by him.

The source named Malaysiakini, Agenda Daily and Malaysian Insider as some of the news portals that could apply for accreditation.

"We are in the process of issuing the passes.

"They can start applying to the department," said the official.

He said the move was in line with the ministry's decision to have "a more open policy". It is also in keeping with Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek's desire to engage the Internet media.

It's not "ORAL B" but "ORAL ME" ...

'Oral Me' toothpaste raising eyebrows in Kuala Terengganu hypermart

What's in the name?
NST - A toothpaste sold at a hypermarket here, has raised a few eyebrows as well as having drawn laughter as its brand name was considered to be rather suggestive by some people.
The brand? 'Oral-Me'.

The product is a toothpaste manufactured by a Kulim, Kedah, based company.

Melissa Leong, 28, from Sabah, felt the brand name carried sexual connotation.

"Manufacturers should think twice when naming their products," she said. Kuala Lumpur based advertising executive Martin Voon asked if the manufacturer understood the phrase while coining the brand name.

"I'm shocked. Such words are normally found on a spoof,” he said.

Kieran Sharkey, an English teacher in a college, said the name does not carry a positive connotation and could be misconstrued.

"With the amount of information available to the younger generation, I feel they can interpret it wrongly. Manufacturers should be careful otherwise they will be made fun of," he laughed.

The company could not be reached for comment.

Report lodged against Karpal and Guan Eng

By BERNARD SEE

PENANG: Two Opposition leaders found themselves in hot water for allegedly condemning the police during their talk in Air Itam here on Wednesday.

A report was lodged against DAP chairman Karpal Singh and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng by a police officer after they allegedly called the police "lazy" and "good for nothing" among other things.

Karpal is the candidate for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat while Lim is the Bagan parliamentary and Air Putih state seat candidate.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said both of them would soon be called to give a statement over the matter.

"We have classified the case under the Sedition Act 1948 as what was said during the talk had tainted the police force's good name," he said.

In another incident, a man, in his 40s, was nabbed for pulling down the posters of Barisan Nasional candidates in various parts of Air Itam on Thursday.

ACP Azam said the man was caught in the act by a police team on patrol at 11pm, adding that he was released on police bail after his statement was taken.

"We believe that he would pull down the posters each time they were put up. We will be charging him under the Minor Offences Act 1955 soon."

MANA TUDUNG?

zaidom.

Zuraida dikatakan bertanya Haslinda:
Where is your tudung?
Dimana tudung anda?

Lalu apa kata Haslinda:
Mengenakan tudung bukannya suatu isu.

Bangi residents complaint of excessive noise, want it to stop

englishsection

BANDAR BARU BANGI, Mar 1 (ES) - Bandar Baru Bangi residents located in Taman Seri Melur in Seksyen 7 tonight had a respite from the excessive noise pollution emanating from a BN ceramah when it had several humiliating power blackouts.

The BN camp which was hastily built just several days ago, started off the night with a loud song whilst waiting for their VIP guest to arrive.

This continued for the next 15 minutes.

According to an irritated resident who called Harakah, her home was located more than 500 metres away from the BN ceramah, and yet the noise from the songs being played was still too loud.

"The songs the BN camp was playing even managed to drown my loud television set," she said, wishing to remain anonymous.

As overlooking the BN camp was several apartments and flats, I could see everyone peering out their windows silently wishing the commotion to stop, she added.

"Young families with babies and children and also factory workers working on shifts live here, how does BN expect everyone to sleep when they can hear the noise even with all the windows and doors closed," she added.

Pointing out to the many PAS flags hanging out of a nearby apartment block, she said perhaps the BN is worried their support is flagging in the area.

"But I have great doubt whether this loud circus is going to attract anyone to listen to their ceramah," she smiled.

The blackouts ranging from five to ten minutes in duration, first occurred several minutes after the a BN spokesman pooh-poohed the arabic phrase "Allahuakbar" meaning "Allah is Greater", one of the many rallying cries for members of Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS).

The N.26 Bangi state seat is being contested by Kajang Municipal council member Mohd Fathil bin Daud for BN and Dr Shafie Abu Bakar for PAS.

Located just a few metres away was the PAS camp which was significantly larger and erected more than a week ago.

And it was was softly playing a recording of a prayer when the BN camp drowned them with their 'song'. -ES

Municipal officials shoot man in leg

Report: Malaysian municipal officials shoot man in leg while targeting stray dogs
Yahoo News

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysian town officials on a mission to shoot stray dogs accidentally hit a passing motorcyclist in the leg, a news report said Thursday.

Wan Ah Chye, a 60-year-old electrician who was taking his wife shopping in Taiping town in northern Perak state, had to undergo surgery after the shooting, The Star daily reported.

"I saw a dog running in front of my motorcycle and the next moment, I felt a sharp pain in my right calf," Wan was quoted as saying.

The shooters, who work for the Taiping Municipal Council, took Wan to hospital when he showed them his bleeding leg, the paper reported.

Council secretary Shahrom Abdul Malek reportedly said this was the first time someone had been shot in the canine unit's 15-year history. Local police chief Raja Musa Raja Razak was quoted as saying officials should make sure there are no passers-by when they shoot at dogs.

Council and police officials could not immediately be reached.

Culling stray dogs and crows is common in Malaysia. Last year, another municipal council launched a dog-catching competition to encourage locals to help rein in strays, but called off the contest following an outcry by animal rights activists.

The meeting, which is organised by Malaysian Hindu Council, will be held at the historic Batu Caves temple.
