malaysianinsider |
Sin Chew journalist Tan Hoon Cheng was released at 2.30pm today.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said this at a press conference at the Bukit Aman police headquarters.
"She made the first report so we had to get to the bottom of it and we received information that her life was under threat," he said.
He added that blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok would continue to be held for investigations and if there was no reason to hold them, that they would be released within the 60 days allowed for by the Internal Security Act.
He explained that RPK had been held after being given sufficient warning but continued to "create tension" while DAP's Kok had touched on sensitive issues, that is the azan call to prayer.
Kok has since denied this allegation that was originally put forward by Umno's former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Khir Toyo.
Syed Hamid insisted also that the move was not political and it was purely thedecision of the police.
"I can tell you that the police need not refer to me. Under Section 73(1) it is under their discretion but they will let me know.
"I think there has not been any malice on their part. We have acted within the law," he said, adding also that if he interfered in police action, people would say there is a political motive.... selanjutnya.

A Curse on UMNO…
maverique | ... I am absolutely horrified, disgusted and enraged. This is an absolute injustice. Raja Petra’s arrest was bad enough. But to arrest the Sin Chew reporter for reporting what a f-cking racist said instead of arresting him is ridiculous. And so is arresting Teresa Kok on a flimsy accusation from the over-botoxed Khir Toyo. It’s noteworthy but not entirely surprising that the Star and NST chose to downplay the arrests and you can easily compare their coverage of this issue with Malaysiakini.
The question now is: WHAT WILL THE RAKYAT DO? Will you sit pretty and let this injustice fly in your face? Will you sit still and let UMNO insult your intelligence and blatantly oppress your rights? Will you sit by while UMNO robs you of your freedom? Will you be still and quiet as the men and women who fight for your freedom and rights are crushed beneath the weight of tyranny? Will you allow the evil and corrupt tyrants to trample your rights and get away with it?
What will you do?
I tell you: FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! Fight for your future! Fight for your rights and your freedom! Fight UMNO and fight them hard!! Why remain silent on this issue? Wherever you are, sound the call to war. From your mosques, temples and churches, cry out for battle against an evil oppressor. Why do you allow evil men to get away with such blasphemy? Fight them hard!!
Who is Badawi but a corrupt and impotent monkey who cannot even run his own party let alone the nation? Who is Syed Hamid Albar but a fool who cannot even speak proper English? You want to let such low-life men trample your rights underfoot? Are you willing to let intellectually-inferior and morally-bankrupt goons oppress you?
Where are the religious leaders at this crucial point of time? If they remain silent, may they be judged severely by the Almighty. If they, by their silence and cowardice, choose to endorse this blasphemous behavior, then may a pox be upon their homes!... selanjutnya.

UMNO Back to Its Old Tricks!
Every ISA arrest is a political decision to safeguard the interest of the ruling elite. These arrest has nothing to do with the security of the country. The only security these arrest guarantees is the security of the ruling elite.
This is not new in Malaysian politics and UMNO is not new to this game. The arrest of
Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin, Sin Chew Daily journalist Tan Hoon Cheng and Member of Parliament Theresa Kok and many more which may follow is yet another last resort to safe a corrupt Government in its finals days in office.
In previous encounters, the people are divided according to race and religion and this makes the job of the ruling party easy. March 8 and the Permatang Pauh elections results has shown that race based politics do not seem to win the hearts of the young people, as well as it has been rejected by the majority of the voters.
The wounded UMNO and its wounded allies will try everything to cling to power.
This latest desperate attempt by UMNO to be in power is enough reason why it is time to replace them. It is now the right time for parties like GERAKAN and PPP who claim that they are against the ISA to make a stand and leave Barisan National.
The moment has come for all of us to make and take a stand. The ruling and corrupt BN elites is going to use all its resources to clamp down but we have the numbers and the motivation and now we need the courage to fight back.
We face an imminent economic crisis, the working class face raising inflation and further cuts to their wages and benefits. BN and the ruling capitalist classes want us to forget this and create a climate of fear. Create a climate, which will ensure we remain docile while they continue to rule us. It is time we put back our agenda the agenda of the workers and the common people.
Great movements in history are not determined by dozens of people but by the mass movement willing to bring about a change. It is time we unite and mobilize the forces for change. Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) would stand together with our clenched fist and we are determined to defend and defeat the onslaught from UMNO and its allies.

Injury Time, Play Dirty
pantheraleo1982 | .... I was cut off from the rest of the world for around 15 hours. Well no, I wasn’t held hostage or anything. Just that there was a buka puasa (breaking of fast) do at my work place and then due to the inevitable pigging out that followed, I feel dead asleep. As it was my turn to be on standby at 12, I continued staying there until my shift happened this morning.
With 16th September looming, one might thinking that the real action was going to happen on Tuesday and the days following that but no, was I so wrong. Looks like the BN-lead government realises that it’s injury time and since they’re trailing 0-3, they’ve decided to play dirty.
The arrest Seputeh MP and Selangor state Senior Exco member Teresa Kok Suh Sim, blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng reeks of political conspiracy and intimidation.
The worst (not that the other two are not as bad) was the arrest of Tan Hoon Cheng. Her crime? Reporting the racist words of the Scourge Of Malaysia (Datuk) Ahmad Ismail during the recent Permatang Pauh by-election which resulted them being published. It’s a sad day for Malaysia.

Kenyataan Media Berkenaan Tahanan ISA, 13 September 2008

When Umno sneezes we catch a cold
malaysianinsider | History is repeating itself with the ISA blitz on Friday but not necessarily in the same manner or order as in 1987.
While before Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was fighting for his political life with Tengku Razaleih Hamzah, this time the Umno situation is more complicated with the political careers of several powerful individuals at issue.
There is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, who has - after succumbing to great pressure - consented to hand over the reins power to his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak in June 2010.
But that timetable is unacceptable to others who want him to leave before the Umno polls in December.
As things stand now Abdullah is fighting a "do or die" battle to stay alive. It would be a miracle if he survives past December as Umno president.
His fate will be decided during the Umno divisional elections beginning in October.... selanjutnya.

- Bernama

Invoking ISA is not the solution, says Koh
NST | Former Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail may have an unlikely advocate on the question of whether he should be dealt with under the Internal Security Act for allegedly making racially sensitive statements in the run-up to the Permatang Pauh by-election.
And that person is Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon himself, the man he has been feuding with.
Koh said the party had always supported the due process of law despite suggestions that the ISA be applied in this case.
"Out of anger and disgust, some of our leaders have called for the use of the most stringent law.
"But I agree with Rais that we should proceed with the Sedition Act and other laws first," he said, referring to Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim's statement on the subject.
Rais had stated on Thursday that Ahmad should not be detained under the ISA and hoped his case would go through the normal process of law.... selanjutnya.

MPs coming home sooner from Taiwan
Star | The backbenchers who flew to Taiwan on Monday for an agricultural study trip are coming back sooner than expected.
However, Backbenchers Club chairman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing claimed this was not due to the presence of PKR leaders who themselves flew out to Taiwan on Friday afternoon.
“Our study trip was scheduled to end on Sept 13 or 14. It is now up to the MPs to decide whether they want to extend their stay in Taiwan, go home to Malaysia or go elsewhere. “In fact, on Sept 9, 11 MPs went back to Malaysia. The trip was never meant to last until Sept 17,” he said when contacted in Taiwan.
Tiong said the original dates of Sept 7 to 19 for the study trip only indicated a “window of opportunity” for the MPs’ journey.
“I know the PKR members will say that we are running away from them because we won’t be here when they get into Taiwan.
“But this is not true. Our schedule was fixed from Day One and at that time, we didn’t know they would be here.
“In fact, it is a childish move for PKR to send their members here. They should not be so arrogant and look down on us,” he said.... selanjutnya.

Gerakan ISA ketika pembangkang mahu ambil alih kuasa
Malaysiakini |

MStar|
Raja Petra mengundang kemarahan umat Islam berikutan ulasan artikelnya bertajuk "I promise to be a good, nonhypocritical Muslim" yang menggunakan ayatayat yang menghina orang Islam selain membenarkan ulasan yang menghina Islam dan Nabi Muhammad (SAW) untuk artikel 'Not all Arabs are descendants of the Prophets' yang disiarkan dalam laman web Malaysia Today.
