Thais, Singaporeans happy with lifting of fuel ban

malaysianinsider - While Malaysians are crying foul over the increase in fuel prices announced by the government on Wednesday, their neighbours in Thailand and Singapore welcomed Malaysia's decision to lift the ban on the sale of fuel to foreign-registered vehicles up to 50km inside Malaysia from their common borders.

Thai trader Adnan Bongsu, 40, said the move would mean that he would be able to continue to commute across the Malaysian-Thai border with ease for his business and also to fill up his tank.

"I was so happy when I read the news. It saves me the trouble of having to go far to fill my tank," he said here yesterday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Wednesday announced the restructuring of fuel prices which saw petrol and diesel prices go up to RM2.70 and RM2.58 per litre, respectively.

This was followed by an announcement by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad on the lifting of the sale of fuel to foreign-registered vehicles up to 50km inside Malaysia from the country's borders with Thailand and Singapore.

Another Thai national, Kamal Musa, 52, said the lifting of the ban was welcome news, especially for residents in Golok who work across the border.... selanjutnya.
