Malaysia's Minister of Health, Chua Soi Lek, recently resigned over a little thing like this:

• Chua confirmed the video was recorded in 2005, when he was 58.

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek described his move to national politics as a mistake and blamed his downfall on his commitment to his work as Health Minister.

“My biggest political mistake ever since coming to Kuala Lumpur is that I thought I should fulfil my obligations as Health Minister and as (MCA) vice-president,” he said.

The 60-year-old former Health Minister said the job required him to travel around the country to know about hospitals and medical facilities and for people to know him because he was a new face in national politics.

The most watched clip on YouTube for the last few days is titled "Malaysia Minister of Health's Sex DVD Adventure", a teasing reference to the adulterous video that has forced the resignation of Chua Soi Lek, the country's health minister. Posted on Jan 1, it has already had nearly a million hits.



But users hoping (or dreading) to see a 60-year-old man's extra-marital indiscretions will be disappointed (relieved). The clip is just a composite of news reports of the scandal, with only a few grainy seconds of hotel bedroom footage that have been widely broadcast on TV. Any more prurient content would, of course, have been deleted by YouTube.

The reason for the clip's popularity, I sense, is the engrained faith of Internet surfers in the wisdom of crowds. 'It's on the Most Viewed list so it must be good', is the maxim by which many of us choose which articles and videos to visit on our favourite websites.

Usually it works - the Internet is a highly effective sorter of wheat from chaff. But throw in a spicy headline and the public's lust for political humiliations, and the system rather comes undone.

A LESSON TO BN AND MINISTERS

When a sex scandal involving a public figure makes the news, the fate of the leader concerned is all but sealed. So Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who admitted on Tuesday that he was the person who was filmed having extramarital sex, really had no option but to go.

His resignation yesterday from the cabinet, all party posts and from parliament was the logical next step for the health minister, MCA vice president and member of Parliament for Labis although, clearly, he did not think it was necessary for him to quit.

In announcing his resignation, he accused the public of taking the "moral high ground" and said that he thought his quick admission of guilt was good enough to save his career.

He is wrong. It is not about anyone taking the moral high ground. It is about him losing the moral ground to be a leader. A public servant, more so a cabinet minister, is expected to conform to a higher standard of conduct than ordinary citizens. Admission of guilt to a wrongdoing does not grant one exemption from being penalised for that indiscretion. If that was to be the case, many wrongdoers will escape punishment by merely making a confession.

And no matter what is said about the motives of those who distributed the DVD so widely in Johor and other states, the fact remains that what Chua did he did on his own. It wasn’t an entrapment.

This episode should serve as a lesson to all politicians to stop any shenanigans because if they are exposed, then they just have to go. Perhaps the best thing that can be said for Chua is that his quick admission brought the episode to an early close. If he had chosen instead to indulge in a futile game of denial and raising of doubts about the evidence, there would have probably been more muckraking before the inevitable end.

Chua should now be left to deal with the consequences of his actions on his family life in the interests of decency and compassion.

SOI LEK DIPUJI?

Pemimpin yang tidak bermoral dan berakhlak kini mendapat pujian dari UMNO, pemimpin BN dan ramai rakyat Malaysia hanya kerana sikapnya berterus terang. Hebat.....kalau hendak dihormati, perlu tidak bermoral? Patut di dalam UMNO dan BN ramai pemimpin sebegini.

Tidak banyak pemimpin Barisan nasional yang marah dengan sikap Soi Lek kerana ramai yang urut dada rasa tanda lega. Ini masa dia, masa aku .... bila? BN Lega kerana musuh sudah tiada dan BN lega kerana kali ini bukan dia.

Kerana mungkin lumrah digelar pemimpin. Bergelumang dengan nafsu dan nafsi. Cuma membezakan mereka adalah liciknya permainan dan sejauh mana rahsia dapat disimpan.

Tempat rahsia, masa tidak sekata atau jauh dari musuh mereka. Di Malaysia mereka tidak selamat, kerana musuh ada dimana mana. Kerana itu ramai yang keluar negara kerana disana tiada kamera. Disana lebih privasi. Maka bebas lah mereka lakukan apa yang mereka mahu. Tapi jangan hairan kerana tempat bulan persoalan. Bila nafsu gila mendatang, tepi jalan, dalam kereta, depan orang .... tak hairan.

Apa kata Pak Lah?
Apa kata Najib?
Apa kata Noh Omar?
Apa kata Khairy?
Apa kata Nazri?
Apa kata Shahidan?
Apa kata Hisamuddin?
Apa kata semua pemimpin Barisan Nasional?

Mungkin ada yang berkata ......"Nasib baik bukan aku" atau sepatutnya mereka berkata, "Nasib baik kali ini bukan aku."

Soi Lek menyesal kerana mengaku. Kalau dia tahu rakyat tetap tolak, sudah pasti, dia akan ikut cara UMNO berbohong. Kalau tak pandai menipu, macamana boleh jadi pemimpin BN? Bukan kah syarat wajib untuk jadi PEMIMPIN BN, kena pandai menipu. Cuma mungkin sudah kelihatan terang dan nyata, tidak boleh berselindung, maka terpaksa mengaku.

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting has called for a presidential council meeting today to discuss the DVD issue involving party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

Ong will issue a statement after the council meeting.

“I take note of the statement issued by Dr Chua and, as it is an important matter for the party leadership to discuss, the party is calling an emergency presidential meeting,” he said.

Even if the Prima Minisita sack this politician from his health minister position, I don’t think he have to worry anymore. Ketika minum petang tadi, Ketua Dewan Pemuda PAS Pusat, Salahuddin Ayub membayangkan kemungkinan DVD aksi seks seorang pemimpin kanan MCA mempunyai kaitan dengan perebutan kuasa di dalam parti itu.

Ahli Parlimen Kubang Kerian itu yakin perbuatan merakamkan video itu sudah lama dirancang kerana ia dilakukan dengan begitu menyeluruh.

Salahuddin tidak menolak kemungkinan perbuatan pemimpin politik berkenaan sudah lama dijejaki oleh musuh-musuh politiknya.
