Day to revel for Anwar & Co

malaysianinsider - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today poured scorn on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to resign from Umno. For good measure, he also threw a few barbs at the manner in which the ruling party operates.

Pakatan Rakyat officials say that the resignation and the possible upheaval will help them persuade Barisan Nasional MPs to cross over to the Opposition and force the collapse of the government led by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. A highly-placed source in Umno said that party officials are working hard to head off defections and maintains that talk of fresh elections is still premature.

Still, yesterday was a day Anwar and the Opposition enjoyed. The de facto leader of the Opposition and the man Dr Mahathir sacked from government and put in jail in 1998 noted that the former prime minister was following the footsteps of former Umno presidents who also left the party due to dissatisfaction.

"The latest excuse is that this is for the sake of the Malay race. But if Prime Minister Abdullah steps down, he will rejoin Umno. So what we see is Umno in more trouble. Their leaders are grabbing for positions while the welfare of the public is ignored," he said on his blog.... selanjutnya.
