Lighting up the darkness: Vigil for freedom of assembly

Aliran exco member Dr Prema Devaraj (left) along with other representatives from Penang civil society groups holding a candlelight vigil at the junction of busy Penang Road and Kimberley Street on the night of 13 December. They were calling for the right to freedom of assembly to be respected on a day which saw five Hindraf leaders detained under the ISA and in the wake of a series of arrests of other peaceful demonstrators. Police can be seen literally breathing down the necks of those gathered.
