Kuala Lumpur, 17 Feb - Ketua Umum KeADILan Anwar Ibrahim mengecam tindakan pihak berkuasa kerana menggunakan meriam air and gas pemedih mata terhadap ahli protes yang diadakan di Jalan Raja Laut hari Sabtu lalu.

Lebih daripada 300 orang menghadiri himpunan yang bertujuan menyampaikan bunga ros kepada Perdana Menteri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi dan memprotes diskriminasi terhadap kaum etnik India.

“Ini menunjukkan dengan jelas Malaysia adalah negara Polis,” kata Anwar

“Balasan sekeras ini terhadap perhimpunan aman yang hanya ingin menyampaikan bunga kepada Perdana Menteri amat keterlaluan” tambah beliau, yang turut menegaskan pentingnya bertindak saksama terhadap semua kaum dan mengiktirafkan hak-hak asasi manusia untuk berhimpun secara aman.

The group, believed to be Hindu Rights Action Force supporters, surrounded his car last night and demanded for an undertaking for the release of women and children who were detained during a Hindraf rally in Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning.

They also locked the door of SJKC Chung Hwa Pusat 3 in Taman Senangin here where a Chinese New Year function was being held.

They relented after Samy Vellu said he would talk to the relevant authorities.
After 15 minutes, police came and cleared the way for Samy Vellu to leave.
It is understood that the group had been misinformed that some 100 children had been detained by police during the rally in Kuala Lumpur.

Police, however, said no children except for an 11-year-old girl were detained. The girl was later released.
J. Balamurugan, 31, one of the spokesmen for the group, said they only wanted to ensure that children were released.

Another supporter, M. Ravindran, 37, said the group did not want to hurt Samy Vellu or cause any problem.
Earlier, Samy Vellu was also jeered by a group when he was giving a speech at a meeting with Rukun Tetangga and Umno branch members at Chai Leng Park here.

After the function, he approached the people and listened to their problems.

The Star (15/2/2008): The sounds of traditional Indian drums and music welcoming MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu came to an abrupt stop shortly after he alighted from his Mercedes Benz and was swamped by a group of unhappy men.

Even before he could grace groundbreaking ceremony of the SJK Seaport Tamil School in Kampung Lindungan, Petaling Jaya, Samy Vellu’s mood had changed.

He had been seen earlier smiling and chatting with his deputy Datuk G. Palanivel when both arrived together.

Samy Vellu spent about ten minutes listening to the claims made by the men, some of whom were carrying placards alleging unfairness and claiming that the land allocated for the new school had shrunk from 2.8ha to 0.6ha.

It was Samy Vellu’s second event after Parliament had been dissolved. The guest-of-honour at the ceremony was Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo who arrived 30 minutes later.

Samy Vellu and Dr Khir were also present to give away allocation grants to Tamil schools and temples in the state, which has over 800 temples, many of them unregistered, and some dilapidated Tamil schools.

Samy Vellu thanked Dr Khir for giving the Tamil schools a breath of fresh air.

He also said he had requested for funds from the Second Finance Minister on Wednesday morning and received approval at 4.20pm the same day for RM30mil for Tamil schools.

Touching on the proposed Seaport Tamil school he said, “I drew the school plan as I am an architect and I know what is good for the Indians.”

He said the three-storey school would have 18 classrooms and toilet facilities on each floor and would be able to accommodate some 410 pupils.

When Samy Vellu switched to Tamil, the event turned sour as the group of men who had earlier demonstrated began jeering and shouting “Makkal Sakhti” or People’s Power.

A visibly upset Samy Vellu stopped his speech and said, “You can shout and shout until your throat tears but I’m not afraid of your tactics or anybody.

“You do not represent the people but the crowd here is what People’s Power is,” he said, adding that there was no proof to their claims that the school had originally been allocated a larger plot of land.

Samy Vellu said he expected such disturbances at his functions from now on and he would not be frightened.

Dr Khir later explained that the original allocation for the Seaport school was 0.4ha and RM600,000 and it has been increased to RM1.2mil now

Dr Khir was saddened to see some people in Selangor resorting to unruly behaviour at an official function and he took a swipe at the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) group.

Dr Khir announced that he was giving actual cheques and not mock cheques of RM2mil to Tamil schools and RM1mil to Hindu temples in Selangor.

Mohd Khir left before the school groundbreaking ceremony, which was performed by Samy Vellu under heavy police presence and he was later escorted to his car.

The function also saw a huge turnout of aspiring MIC candidates who stood close to the stage and Samy Vellu’s car to make sure the party chief noticed them.

According to an Umno member who was at the event, this was an unusual turn of events.

“If this is an indication of how the campaign trail is going to be, it is not going to be a smooth one,” he said.

Elders at the function applauded Samy Vellu for his might at getting things done for the community but it will take more than his valour to impress the youngsters.

In Selangor, MIC only has four parliamentary and three state seats allocated to it and there are many young and enterprising individuals vying to be candidates.

Also present at the gathering was Samy Vellu’s son Vel Paari, who is Maika Holdings chief executive officer, fuelling talk that he might also be contesting.

Currently, MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel occupies the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat while MIC national youth chief S. It is impossible to complain about the rules of the game against the person who made the game, umpires the game and controls most of the players in the game, without breaking some of the rules.

It is easy for Abdullah Badawi, and everyone else in BN to accuse others of breaking the law, because they define and decide who breaks this law. It is his government that decides what is a peaceful protest and what is not. They do this both technically (because the Home Ministry gives the permission) and practically (because they send troops and spray chemical water that make people run because their eyes are on fire). If they gave the permit, or didn't send troops, all that would happen would be a large assembly of people, sending a memorandum and roses. They'll come, speak their voice and go home.

So to accuses a rally of being illegal, without telling us why specifically this rally was disallowed, is hypocritical and self serving. Quite simply, why is okay for UMNO Youth to rally, shout and scream outside the US Embassy, but not for common Malaysians to walk the streets with roses and a memorandum?

Thus there are two points to be made here
a) the government's specific behavior in permitting protests are self-serving and hypocritical. It is designed to support themselves and force the Malaysian society to believe only what they want them to.
b) it is a logical fallacy to accuse and abuse protesters of illegal behaviour solely for the illegality of that behavior, when you are the person who created the illegal behaviour to begin with. It is like an abusive parent punishing you for drinking juice, without telling you why only you cannot drink juice and other people can.

To fully obey the letter of the law in Malaysia means to only criticize the government when they allow you, and only in a way in which they allow you to. Malaysia wants to be the center of the World, a World leader in technology, business, education, sport; but if in this age 5 people cannot have a meeting without a permit, then the only truth is the Government speaks in the language of today but thinks in the dark ages. It is a brutal insecure Government, a bully who feels strong because they have guns and troops, but are unwilling to trust and teach people. Unwilling and maybe even unable to convince and persuade people to do the right thing.

So the question us Malaysians must ask ourselves is, are the rules fair? Are they equally applied to us? You may not have been the unarmed man on the street, being beaten by a policemen wearing a helmet, shield and baton, sadly all paid from his (and our) tax money. But you live by the same laws he does, your children educated by the same system, your company controlled by the same laws, your religion observed by the same officials, your IC and passports issued by the same ministry. When your goverment does something that you feel unfair, will they let you speak out at them or will they beat you in the street like a dog?

Act now before you are left with no choice. Vote for change.

Malaysiakini - Indians across the world demonstrated outside the offices of Malaysian embassies and high commissions on Saturday to condemn the government and police, hours after tear gas and water cannons were fired in Kuala Lumpur at people bringing flowers to persuade Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi to release five Hindraf leaders from detention.

The demonstrations – which took place almost simultaneously in New York, Los Angeles, London, Belgium, Northern Island, Indonesia, New Zealand, New Delhi and Mumbai – were believed to be the first internationally-coordinated action in support of the Indian cause in Malaysia.

Although there were no more than a few dozen people protesting in each of the cities, their action underlined the growing disgust among Indians all over the world at Abdullah and his police force, said organisers.

"Which sicko of a prime minister would allow his police to fire tear gas and chemical-laced water at people trying to bring him flowers?" asked Anantha Paskaran, one of those who led the demonstration outside the Malaysian Consulate General's office in New York.

"We talk about the Soviet Union, Chechnya and Burma when it comes to human rights violations," said Anantha. "What about this so-called moderate Muslim country Malaysia? It has a police force than can rival the Gestapo and KGB".

On Saturday, Malaysian police used teargas and water cannons to disperse about 300 Hindu Rights Action Force supporters who had gathered along Jalan Raja Laut to hand Abdullah hundreds of roses.

Calling it a "rose protest", Hindraf had said it wanted to give the flowers to the premier, asking him, among others, to release the five Hindraf leaders held under the Internal Security Act. The plan was initially to get a group of children to hand over the roses to Abdullah at Parliament. That, however, fell through when police blockaded roads leading to Parliament, forcing the supporters to group at Jalan Raja Laut instead.

The police eventually arrested about 200 people and released all but nine whom they said defied repeated orders to disperse.

Abdullah, in an immediate reaction, labelled Hindraf as group of "extremists" out to disrupt general elections scheduled on March 8.

Anantha said it was "most laughable" for the premier to link the incident with the upcoming polls in Malaysia.

In what way can the Indians in Malaysia disrupt the electoral process that's underway? They are minorities, marginalised in every sense of the word, and don't even have enough resource to fend for themselves, let alone disrupt a national election," he said.

The 51-year-old former Malaysian-turned-US citizen who runs a financial consultancy in Queens, New York, also appeared to pre-empt any possible remark by Abdullah that Indians outside of Malaysia had no business with what was happening in the country.

"For the prime minister's information, I still have family members in Malaysia and they are paying income taxes too, so I have every right to speak on their behalf," Anantha said.

He said the weather in New York was below 32 degrees Farenheit (0 degrees Celcius) on Saturday and those who turned up outside the Consulate General's office in Manhattan, including women and children, braved icy winds for nearly 2 hours.

"We were freezing on the outside but we were burning on the inside at what's happening to our fellow Indians in Malaysia," Anantha said.

In New York, demonstrators even brought a mock coffin for MIC President S Samy Vellu, who has been fiercely criticised for failing the Indian community. A sign above the coffin read: "Samy Vellu – Traitor of Indian Malaysians, R.I.P. (Rest In Peace)."

In another interesting picture, five people also wore cut-out pictures of the faces of the five detained Hindraf leaders, holding up their wrists in a symbolic sign of incarceration.

A big shame

And not all those who participated in the foreign demonstrations were Indians of Malaysian origin.

Fiona Lee, an ethnic Chinese from Malaysia, said in comments to Malaysiakini that she decided to join the protest in New York "because these are issues affecting all Malaysians."

"To me, the marginalisation of the Indian community is very real," said the 25-year-old, who has lived in the United States for seven years now and is pursuing a doctorate in English at the City University of New York.

"I grew up in Cheras and I belonged to a church group that used to visit Indian slums where the children had little access to education, food and even clothing," Lee said. "To say they are being equally treated is the biggest sham."

There were no officials from the Malaysian Consulate General's office in New York to receive any memorandums from the protesters. However several officials were seen snapping photographs of the protesting crowd.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia on Saturday quelled an unusual protest “walk” organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) at a number of places here.

In a dramatic show of force, police fired teargas and targeted water cannon at several hundred ethnic Indians, who defiantly assembled for a “roses campaign” demanding justice while offering these flowers as a gesture of goodwill towards the authorities.

Following an overnight ban on this “campaign,” Hindraf abandoned its original melodramatic plan of staging a short “walk” towards the Parliament House here, with children in the vanguard and carrying roses for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Vwaishhnnavi, five-year- old daughter of self-exiled Hindraf chairman P. Waytha Moorthy, was designated to lead the “walk” and greet the Prime Minister. Under guidance, she had earlier written a letter to him requesting him to accept such an offer.

In the final act on this day of “state power,” Hindraf followers raised an hour-long chorus of slogans about “people power” at a Vinayaka temple in the heart of the city, even as a lone woman walked up to a riot-control officer there and handed him a yellow rose. Another police officer was seen declining a similar offer even as Hindraf supporters began cheering her. The standoff near the shrine passed off without the police using water cannon that was on stand-by.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested 160 Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) supporters who took part in its “rose” campaign Dataran Merdeka area Saturday and nine of them, including a woman have been held for further investigations

Of the 160 arrested, 138 were men and 22 were women, including an 11-year-old girl. The girl was later released.

Okay. Breathe, Carol, breathe.

Someone needs to enlighten me as to why an 11-year old girl was arrested.

We’ve all been 11 at some point of our lives. How would you like to have been arrested at that age?

What could she possibly have done to warrant being arrested? To be lumped in with grown men and women… possibly handcuffed and shoved? Can you imagine? The whole melee, and this little 11-year old girl, who, unless is extremely tall, is probably at least 1 foot shorter than everyone else being pushed around, confused?

Seriously. Did they slap handcuffs on her? That would be a traumatic experience okay. Were the policemen rude to her? Did they shout vulgarities at her?

It is bad enough when a peaceful rally is treated this way by gomen… it was a ROSE Rally for goodness’ sake. Just people, armed with a rose as a symbol of peace! What could they have done with it? Poke people with its thorns?!

And oh, let’s see, I just got an update through Malaysiakini:

By 6pm today, the police released all arrested Hindraf supporters, including 20 children, except for nine people who are still being detained for questioning.

I am appalled. Wow, thanks, government. Thanks for showing your true colors again. S.V., I’ll like to take you up on your claim that “the majority of Indians would vote for the ruling Barisan in the election.” We’ll see about that. Indeed… especially after today. =)

Once again, to re-clarify what I’ve already mentioned in a reply for my previous post… I’m not saying that you should 100% vote for the opposition. Vote for the RIGHT person. Vote for the person whom you think really WOULD be able to represent you, not some sleeping MP who doesn’t do anything for the community. By saying vote WISELY, I meant by using your head. Not all of the Opposition are good, but then again… neither are a lot of the current ruling coalition.

Demonstrasi ini digerakkan oleh Hindu Right Action Force, Hindraf. Kelompok Hak warga India Malaysia itu menuntut lima pemimpinnya dibebaskan dari penjara.

Para aktivis kelompok mengatakan, kebijakan yang memberikan kemudahan ekonomi kepada warga mayoritas, etnis Melayu, itu merupakan diskriminasi terhadap warga keturunan India.

Pemerintah Malaysia menafikan tudingan perlakuan tidak adil tersebut.

Wartawan BBC Robin Brant, yang menyaksikan unjukrasa hari ini, melaporkan, panitia mengatakan dua ratus anak sedianya akan menjadi barisan terdepan dalam aksi ini.

Mereka ingin menyerahkan bunga kepada sang perdana menteri sebagai persembahan valentine yang terlambat.

Tidak ada satu pun bocah yang ikut dilaporkan terluka.

Namun, PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi tidak ada di tempat itu, dan massa pengunjukrasa tidak diperkenankan mendekati gedung parlemen.

Kelompok di belakang unjukrasa ini adalah barisan aksi hak warga hindu, Hindraf. Kelompok ini semakin efektif dalam melakukan tekanan terhadap pemerintah, kata wartawan kami.

Mereka menggelar unjukrasa di ibukota Malaysia bulan November lalu dengan mengerahkan sekitar 10 ribu warga etnis India.

Rapat umum itu menggambarkan ketidakpuasan yang semakin besar di kalangan sebagian warga minoritas India Malaysia, yang merasakan mereka tertinggal setelah beberapa puluh tahun kebijakan pemerintah memberikan prioritas kepada warga mayoritas, Melayu.

Lima aktivis ditahan dalam unjukrasa terbesar yang melibatkan warga etnis India dalam kurun lebih dari satu dasawarsa.

Hindraf Rose Protest: Hearing at 8.30 am today

The police acted like hooligans again.In this country, giving the flower of love Roses to the Prime Minister is a very serious offence.Even chemical-laced water and teargas must be used to disperse the young flower-givers.

Ironically, some of the protesters shouted ” we love Badawi (i.e. the prime minister). (Huh? still love badawi after all these ugly happenings?)

Some of them carry the portrait of the King to demonstrate their love for him.

Only about 500 made it to Jalan Raja Laut area. But I would say that more than 5,000 protesters were in KL yesterday despite of the stern warnings from the BN government.

About 2,000 regrouped at the temple in Pudu according my friend Temenggong.He was there with his two lovely daughters. I was proud of him.

I will be at the Duta Courts today at 8.30 am together with some DAP lawyers.

Gobind Singh Deo, RPK, David Bala and I went to the police station at the former Pudu Jail to see if we could help after the mass arrest.

The Dang Wangi OCPD refused to meet us over the arrest. What a coward!

Refusing to Sit Down and Talk

But not in Malaysia. It's just only 300 ordinary citizens wishing to meet with the Prime Minister to hand over roses and wishing him to release the 5 figureheads of HINDRAF out from the detention cell in Taiping. After all, he's the one sending them there under Musa Hassan's bullshit allegation (no proof yet). It was just a gesture of saying 'please' to the man himself. And later on, as at Malaysiakini the man himself lashes out at HINDRAF but he simply does not know why / the whole picture and he refused to sit down and talk with them. He knows nothing. If he had not gone to Kedah and instead meet with them, then there will not be such a similar episode as the last rally in November.

But instead of talking to the people as what a leader should do, what they get in return are BN's cannon fodders - police with their tools of people repelling a.l.a. water cannons and tear gases. And Dollah is refusing to meet them, instead doing a one-day visit to Kedah. In the end? 200 arrested, with all except 9 released at night. One question here: was he influenced by the son-in-law or Wan Farid Salleh not to meet them? The FRUs and the police surely are in the government's payroll and their resources are perceived by some as infinite. But don't forget that it's taxpayer's money, not their own and by doing so, it subtly hints that the police force is not INDEPENDENT at all but instead a 'cannon fodder' of Abdullah Badawi and does show of 'the holier than thou' message. I emphasize here that the police are just puppets of the corrupt. And another thing is that they are looking at the wrong direction instead of doing something that is more important like finding Sharlinie.

Doing so can bring grim results and puts a first dent to the National Front campaign in terms of intending to retain a 2/3 majority. Note that they must win 148 Parliamentary seats to retain 2/3 majority. It seems that the pendulum of vote that they might muster could swing the other way round to Keadilan. And Samy Vellu is again put in hot water again. There were 60 people blocking his motorcade leaving the place of visit there.

The BBC and Al-Jazeera managed to cover this event as well and while going through some of the pictures shown up at their site there, I stumbled upon one of the pictures of man arrested that was exactly the person I saw when I took a photo back in the Bersih rally. Again, we see how rough the police dealt with non-armed protesters as if those are hardcore criminals with their violent tactics and intimidation. Perhaps this is why the police is lacking support from the public because of the way they deal with people - against their motto. They are slow, rude and wrong, in the sense that they are not fast in dealing crimes (well under pressure, that's to be understood, but the highlight is being rude and they are now looking at the wrong direction, clamping people down like dogs instead going for a backlog of unsolved cases like Altatunya's murder.)

I just had taken a look at the reporting at Bernama and judging the content gives me the impression that the government is bragging over this thing. Now I understand why the police had to do this: just as like an BN MP, they must toe the official line laid out and if they go according to their conscience or the mandate of their people, then they face the whipping by their own whipping committee, in this case, Musa and Dollah.

With election around the corner, well, it's time to rethink again. All the high hopes of what is to be expected in 2004 are now in shambles. Corruption is still high, crimes rates are still high, price inflation is angering the people and the cronies are still running around wild. In the end, it's just empty promises. Urban people can understand this well but not those rural people and they are the ones that will need some tough talk and convincing to make them aware of the mistakes that the Barisan Nasional committed and swept under the carpet by their main tool: mainstream media. I told some people that I buy newspapers because I want to read sports news and some sections like In Tech or Star 2, but never go through in detail at the local news. So, there could be some punishment served RAW on the 8th. Sins of the father? Correct...correct...correct!

The government perceives citizens as kids that knows nothing except to let them handle. But......The people now are no longer in the dark as before.

Barisan Nasional should be worried about the alleged waning support from Indian communities in this general election. Issues raised by Hindraf are the most the worrying factor for Barisan Nasional in the coming general election.

Hindraf purportedly organized the gathering at Parliament House to hand over roses to the Prime Minister but not one rose was seen clearly can be seen as a political protest. It can be seen as the strategy of exploiting the 13-day campaign period for the general election to petition the release of the movement’s five leaders detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Hindraf, which claims that Hindus have been marginalized besides also making outrageous accusations of ethnic cleansing against the Government, purportedly organized the gathering at Parliament House to hand over roses to the Prime Minister and to petition the release of the movement’s five leaders detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

But not one rose was seen and instead, the gathering took the form of a political protest with Hindraf leaders urging the crowd not to vote for the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition in the March 8 general election.

Teargas and water cannons were fired by police upon some 300 Hindraf supporters and some 200 people were arrested who defied orders to hold an illegal rally in Kuala Lumpur 16 Februari 2008.

The protesters had also for weeks said the rally would be peaceful and they would bring their children along. There were hardly any children in sight and most of the protesters were between 20 and 60.

Prime Minister Abdullah lashes out at extremist Hindraf. He says that the Hindraf gathering this morning was an attempt to raise fear in the people and disrupt the polls which would be held on March 8.

MIC Presiden Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has advised Indian voters not to let emotions rule when casting their votes on March 8 as they will end up regretting it. The MIC president said it was important for them to vote wisely for the sake of their children and the Indian community.

Kerana pemberian bunga Rose kepada Dollah badawi. Kuala Lumpur sesak. Dollah tidak datang, yang datang FRU dan POLIS. Hampir 200 orang di tangkap termasuk kanak kanak. Sebelum ini, baju 'Kuning', baju berwarna 'jingga'. Warna 'Hijau' dan sekarang 'Bunga Rose' sudah menjadi perkara sensitif kepada pemimpin Barisan Nasional.

Berita kesesakan jalanraya sudah bukan menjadi satu isu penting lagi. Bukan kerana upacara itu ia menjadi sesak tetapi kerana kebimbangan para pemimpin sendiri. Sekatan jalanraya dibuat menuju ke Kuala Lumpur dan kesesakan pun berlaku. Ini berlaku pada setiap perhimpunan yang dibuat oleh mereka yang tidak setuju dengan kerajaan. Kalau perhimpunan yang dianjurkan oleh BN .... jalan lengang. Jalanraya disesakkan oleh pihak berkuasa dengan sekatan, agar pihak pengguna menyalahkan pihak yang berhimpun secara aman. Ini sudah berlaku banyak kali.

Kalau kita ingat, setiap kali Le Tour De Langkawi, setiap jalan di seluruh Malaysia akan ditutup selama 3 jam untuk pelumba. Manakala kalau pulang menyambut Hari Raya pada apa bangsa sekalipun akan turut berlaku kesesakan. Baru baru ini, Gong Xi Fat Chai telah menghasilkan kesesakan jalanraya hampir 12 jam di seluruh Malaysia. Kita sudah biasa dahhh......

Police in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur have used tear gas and chemical-laced water to break up an anti-government protest by ethnic Indians demanding racial equality.

On Saturday about 300 men, women and children were dispersed by about 100 policemen, including riot police with helmets and shields.

"Police were too rough" said S Manikavasagam, a spokesman for the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), the ethnic indian group that organised the protest.
"They used their power," he said.

Since Friday about 60 people, including two leaders of Hindraf who organised the protest, have been detained in a police crackdown, said N Surendran, a lawyer and Hindraf member.

Protesters were carrying roses to symbolise a peaceful demand for justice.
The Malaysian government is concerned about street protests in the run up to early general elections on March 8 and any gathering of more than four people requires a police permit.
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Malaysian prime minister, is widely expected to retain power at the polls with his ruling party coalition, but with a reduced majority.
Many Indians accuse his multi-racial coalition, which is dominated by ethnic Malays, of racial discrimination.

Police crackdown
Hindraf first announced the protest in January to press the government to release five of its leaders who have been jailed under tough internal security laws.

The men were detained without trial after more 10,000 ethnic Indians marched in the capital last November to complain about a lack of job and education opportunities.
The protesters on Saturday planned to gather outside parliament to hand a protest note and roses to Abdullah, but they were halted by police a short distance away.

"I want the five to be released," Parvathy Raman, a 30-year-old accounts executive from Kuala Lumpur, said.
"I want the government to hear our problems. Everyone knows there is discrimination, but the government denies it."

Hindraf said the red roses symbolised love and peace, while the yellow roses symbolised the group's demand for justice and the release of the jailed men.

Protesters defied police orders to disperse, but scattered when sprayed with tear gas and water laced with chemicals.

Malaysian Police vs Children with Roses

HOT NEWS ! Malaysian Police fired teargas and chemical-laced water cannons at Children’s Rose Flower Parade in Kuala Lumpur, 3 weeks before 12th General Elections.

Malaysiakini.com reported Police fired teargas and chemical-laced water cannons in a bid to disperse some 300 Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) supporters gathered for a peaceful rose handing-over ceremony at Jalan Raja Laut early this morning.

The Hindraf event was initially scheduled to be held at Parliament gates where 200 children were to hand over roses as a peaceful gesture requesting that Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to heed the group’s 18-point demands.

News that roads leading to Parliament were closed to prevent the group from going there then led them to change the venue to Jalan Raja Laut in the city centre.

According to Hindraf acting leader S Thanenthiran who was present at the gathering, about 200 people have been arrested including Hindraf’s rose campaign coordinator S Manickavasagam and popular blogger B Mahendran.

Women and children were among those detained.

Witnesses also claimed that police had aggressively manhandled a women with her child when they wanted to arrest her.

“The woman was crying aloud because the police forced her to leave her child when she was arrested,” said Mahendran who later informed Malaysiakini of the woman’s condition through his mobile phone.

Thanenthiran added that almost two thirds of them were detained prior to the gathering at roadblocks set up along the routes leading to the city. They are being held at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur.

There were heavy police and riot squads presence in Jalan Raja Laut. Four water cannon trucks were stationed along the route leading to Parliament.

It is learnt that the police have been stationed at key areas pertaining to the gathering since last night. Roadblocks were also set up at various key routes leading into the city.

“The police outnumbered the crowd in three folds. I saw several of them firing teargas canisters to the peaceful crowd. Why is there a need to fire that many teargas canisters when one is strong enough (to disperse the crowd),” said a tourist who happened to be in the area.

After the teargas and water cannons were fired, the crowd were chased by some 40 plainclothes policemen. They then retreated into the Masjid India area.

The dispersed crowd then walked in small separate groups towards the Court Malai Pillayar Temple in Jalan Pudu where another stand- off occurred between Hindraf supporters and the police.

At this point, ten people were arrested while seeking shelter in the temple. Three more were later nabbed while making their way to the KL Remand Centre in Jalan Hang Tuah to show support to some Hindraf members who were detained last night.

By this time, the crowd had dispersed and small groups made their way to Pulapol to show support to those detained. According to A Sivanesan who is the group’s legal adviser, lawyers have been sent to Pulapol to ensure that detainees get proper legal help.

Mahendran, who was arrested near the Masjid Jamek area, had managed to contact Malaysiakini through his mobile phone and said that the “police are taking people in batches for questioning”

Self-exiled Hindraf chairperson P Waythamoorthy in a statement issued immediately after learning of the arrests said he was extremely disturbed by the manner in which the police handled the matter.

“Peaceful struggle, gesture of Love and cry for justice of the poor and underclass Indian society has been met with violence and brutality by the state sanctioned by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The attack on peaceful poor and underclass people who came with roses is appalling,

“I invite all peace loving people throughout the world to condemn this brutal attack on innocent citizens who were exercising their rights under Article 10 of the Malaysian Federal Constitution and Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” he said.

Police have declared today’s event illegal as no permit was given to the group, eventhough Hindraf have applied for a permit few weeks ago.

Maybe some background on today’s outrage is called for. On November 25, 2007 tens of thousands of Malaysians of Indian descent took to the streets to protest decades of discriminatory policies that have left the community among one of the poorest in the country. The catalyst that led to this was a series of demolishments of Hindu temples over a period of more than a year. The protests was met by a severe crackdown on the streets with police violence and 5 leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Force or HINDRAF, the movement that organised the protests, were arrested under admnistrative detention using the Internal Security Act 1960.

Today’s flower parade was held to pressure the government to either put the ISA 5 detainees to trial or release them unconditionally. Many of those present were children, including the children of the detainees. With the recent revelation that there has been attempts to use force to attain confessions of “terrorist activities” by the detainees, the need for transparency in this case becomes all the more urgent.

The Barisan Nasional can deny all it wants that they do not discriminate the citizens of Malaysia based on ethnicity and social class but actions speak louder than words. Why react to mere words and peaceful expressions of dissent with such indiscriminate show of force unless one really has something to hide? And why so much spin to paint the victims as the aggressors?

Fortunately, Malaysians still have an opportunity to reject through the ballot box these arrogant power brokers who feel that their callous manipulation of the socio-economic and general wellbeing of the Malaysian people and the wholesale misdirection of the people’s money are their birthright. We just have to look beyond the spin and find out for ourselves what is really happening in this country and correctly identify the powers that are responsible. We owe it to ourselves and our future generation to do so. Don’t let them take away even this residual right to decide on our own collective destiny before we decide to wake up.

20 Children arrested by our Police for trying to hand Roses to our PM...!!!

It came to our attention that 20 children were among the estimated 250 people arrested this morning for trying to hand Roses to our PM peacefully. These children are now being held at Jabatan Kebajikan Kepong and their parent were told to produce their respective Birth Cerificate despite knowing that they are from outstation.

Seems like again Suhakam gone missing...again and PM failed to impress our call for peaceful gathering to hand him Roses.

My simple mind says...why don't the POLICE use the parent's My Kad and cross reference against the JPN Record. Aren't we know as a nation with high tech I.T capability...??.

With the Malaysian government concerned about street protests in the run-up to early general elections on March 8, around 100 policemen, including riot police with helmets and shields, turned out to disperse a gathering of about 300 men, women and children.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's ruling coalition is widely expected to retain power at the polls, although with a reduced majority, but many Indians accuse his multi-racial coalition, dominated by ethnic Malays, of racial discrimination.

The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hinraf) first announced the protest in January as a way to press its demand for the release of five of its leaders jailed under tough internal security laws.

The Malaysian government detained the men without trial soon after more than 10,000 ethnic Indians marched in the capital last November to complain about a lack of job and education opportunities, in response to a call from the group.

"I want the five to be released," said Parvathy Raman, a 30-year-old accounts executive from Kuala Lumpur, who joined the protest. "I want the government to hear our problems. Everyone knows there is discrimination, but the government denies it."

Children as young as 10 were among the demonstrators at Saturday's protest, where some people carried yellow and red roses, while chanting slogans such as "We love Badawi". Others wore orange T-shirts printed with the slogan "People Power".

The protesters aimed to march to the Malaysian parliament to give the roses to Abdullah, but were halted by police a short distance away after being refused a permit to assemble in public.

The red roses symbolised love and peace, while the yellow roses symbolised the group's demand for justice and the release of the jailed men, Hindraf said.

"We want our rights and justice," said one demonstrator, Tamilarasu, 21, a casual labourer at a golf resort who rode a bus for several hours from his home on the northern island of Penang to attend the protest in the capital. "We're not happy with the government."

Police helicopters hovered overhead as protesters waved the Malaysian flag, portraits of the Malaysian king, and orange banners that read, "We want our rights, No to the Internal Security Act".

Protesters defied police orders to disperse, but scattered when sprayed with tear gas and water laced with chemicals.

"Police were too rough," said S. Manikavasagam, a spokesman for the ethnic Indian group that organised the protest. "They used their power."
