VOTE FOR DAP
In the May 13 Incident on May 13, 1969, a major racial riot broke out between ethnic Malays and Chinese in Kuala Lumpur that suspended the Malaysian parliament for 22 months. It all started when the Chinese demonstrators, who were supporters of the winning Democratic Action Party and Gerakan in the elections, headed through the Malay district of Kampung Baru, jeering at the inhabitants. Some of them carried brooms, allegedly to symbolise the sweeping out of the Malays from Kuala Lumpur, while others chanted slogans about the "sinking" of the Alliance boat — the coalition's logo. However, a recently published book by Kua Kia Soong, May 13: Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969, asserts instead that the riots were started by certain Malay groups within UMNO in a coup d'etat attempt, which the government promptly placed blame on the Opposition parties.
Since then, the Malaysian government aims to stablise the economy by introducing the New Economic Policy (NEP) citing income disparity as the main reason for the riots. NEP is actually created to to increase the ownership of enterprise by Bumiputras from the then 2.4% to 30% of the share of national wealth.
