5 Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) leaders have been arrested by the Special Branch police officers under the Internal Security Act (ISA) today. They were under Section 8(1) which allows the person is detained for any period not exceeding two years. These 5 leaders have been taken to the police headquarters in Bukit Aman.

Those arrested are:
1. P. Uthayakumar (Hindraf legal adviser)
2. M. Manoharan (Lawyer)
3. R. Kenghadharan (Lawyer)
4. V. Ganabati Rao (Lawyer)
5. T. Vasanthakumar (Organizing Secretary)

The first to be arrested was lawyer Kenghadharan, at his office in Petaling Jaya about 12.30pm by a team of police from Bukit Aman. He was followed by Ganabatirau who was picked up by the police in Seremban. Vasanthakumar was nabbed at about 2pm at Brickfields. Ganabati Rao was arrested by a special branch team. Manoharan is believed to have been arrested while he visited Kenghadharan at Bukit Aman while Uthayakumar was taken away from his legal firm in Bangsar.

The Abolish ISA Movement (Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA, GMI) condemns the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) to arrest the 5 Hindraf leaders. GMI further condemns the continued threats of the use of the ISA to instil fear among citizens to deter them from participating in any public gatherings.

The controversial ISA, which has been widely criticized both internationally and locally, is a mark of a government that threats dissent and public criticism with unjust measures. The draconian law has been repeatedly used to clampdown on the democratic movement and opposition leaders in the country. Many have languished in detention without trial for years and suffered inhumane torture and treatment in detention. |more...|
