PETALING JAYA (March 27, 2008): A case of too many too soon? According to a report in China Press today, Selangor Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is "troubled" by the big number of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties' members applying to join the party.
The report said not only are the "defectors" jumping ship, they are also bringing along "recruits", prompting PKR division leaders to raise their guard, as they are worried that they might be inviting trouble and the mass defections turn out to be a bane rather than a boon.
The wind of change that swept the PKR-DAP-PAS coalition to power in Selangor has also threatened to cause a flood of defections in the state.
Sources said in the two weeks since the March 8 general election, some PKR divisions had given out not less than 2,000 membership application forms each.
Most of the applications have been returned to the respective divisions.
The sources pointed out that among those crossing over to the party are current and past branch and division leaders from MCA, Gerakan and MIC.
These grassroots leaders are bringing with them their followers and supporters, raising the concern of some PKR division leaders who are worried that the defectors may eventually pose a threat to their positions in the party. more...
