malaysianinsider - [...] Director-General of the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) Datuk Cheah Kong Wai said besides the maritime uniformed agencies, the public was also allowed access to the area (Middle Rocks) freely.
"Local fishermen from Pengerang and Tanjung Penyusuh in Johor who used to fish in the vicinity of the Middle Rocks, but were prevented from doing so due to the unresolved dispute, are now free to continue their activities, similar to the situation existing under customary rights.
"The recent ICJ decision now guarantees such rights under international law," said Cheah in a statement issued in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The ICJ which sat in The Hague, Netherlands, recently voted 12-4 in favour of Singapore with regard to sovereignty over Pulau Batu Puteh, while Malaysia was given sovereignty over Middle Rocks after a 15-1 vote.
The ICJ also decided that South Ledge belongs to the country in whose territorial waters it is located.
Meanwhile, Cheah said scientific and other types of research activities could now be undertaken without any hindrance in the vicinity of Middle Rocks.
"Construction of installations and fixtures in connection with the tasks of exercising ownership and sovereignty over Middle Rocks can also be undertaken," he said.... selanjutnya.
