PENANG (March 17, 2008): A warrant of arrest was issued against Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) national integration chief N. Gobalakrishnan today when he did not turn up for the hearing of a charge of obstructing a policeman from carrying out his duties.
Gobalakrishnan's counsel Dev Chander told a magistrate's court his client was ill and could not attend the court proceedings.
But because Dev did not produce a medical certificate, the court did not accept his explanation and issued a warrant of arrest against Gobalakrisnan.
Magistrate Ooi Sheow Yean fixed May 29 for the next hearing date.
Gobalakrishnan is charged with voluntarily obstructing Chief Insp V. Saravanan from carrying out his duties on Jalan Utama here at 12.20am on Jan 29, 2002.
He was initially charged on Jan 30, 2002, but was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in December 2004. However, he was charged again with the offence last Nov 30.
The charge, under Section 186 of the Penal Code, carries a penaly of up to two years jail, or a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
Gobalakrishnan, who claimed trial, was allowed bail of RM2,000.
