Samy rubbishes blogs of him not contesting

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu rubbished talk on the web blogs that he is being "forced" by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi not to contest in the coming general election.

In fact, said Samy Vellu, he and the prime minister have never discussed about election and candidates at all. "He has never asked me anything about elections or candidates and I have told him nothing. The day he (Abdullah) decides, he will call one by one all the component party leaders and discuss the candidates' list. But until now nothing of that sort has happened," he said after officiating the opening of Duromac's (M) Sdn Bhd's new premises in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, near here yesterday.

He was responding when asked about a report on one of the blogs that reported that Samy Vellu in a recent meeting with the prime pinister is being forced by Abdullah to resign and not seek re-election in the coming general election.

In jest Samy Vellu said: "Yes. The prime minister told me not to contest in the year 2010. The stories (blog reports) are all work of mad people."

Samy Vellu described as “mad” the people whop spread lies over the Internet and short messaging system over handphones. "But the more they try to destroy the party the stronger we become," he said.

"I know there is one ‘fat mad man’ from Klang whose work is only these (SMS)," said the Works Minister.

On news reports that many aspiring candidates in Selangor were trying to get close to Samy Vellu in an effort to get a seat in the coming general election, the party president said: "Nothing of that sort. We will pick candidates who can work for the people. They must be of calibre and have the ability to serve. Just because they come and show their face to me more often it does not mean they will be picked to contest the general election."

Furthermore, added Samy Vellu the candidates list would have to be approved by the prime minister first.
