Sun2surf - Sungai Pinang assemblyman Teng Chang Khim had an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in Istana Bukit Kayangan today, further fuelling talk that he will be the next speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.
Teng, a fourth-term assemblyman, declined to confirm if his meeting with the Sultan was over his impending ascension to the post when the legislative assembly sits end of this month.
Teng, a practising lawyer, was opposition leader of the assembly from 1995 to 1999 and from 2004-2008.
Met outside the palace gates at 12.15pm, about one and the half hours after he arrived at 10.50am, Teng said: “I sought an audience with the Sultan and we had a good conversation about various matters, including how to develop Klang and its historic heritage.”
Asked if the audience with the Sultan had anything to do with his impending duty as assembly speaker, Teng said: “The speaker is actually elected by the state assembly and not appointed by the Sultan.
“The Sultan can voice his opinion, but Tuanku is not interfering with the appointment of the speaker because according to the constitution, his job is to select the Mentri Besar and to appoint the executive councilors selected by the Mentri Besar,” he said. more...
