4-tomorrow | ....True to the dictator tag conferred by Mahathir (it takes one to recognise another), Abdullah Badawi declared that he will hand over the reins as UMNO and BN president to Najib Razak in mid-2010.
His declaration appears to be a nicely timed signal to the grassroots as UMNO branches will begin their AGMs from 17 July onwards.
The move is seen to stifle any further overtures by the camps of Tengku Razaleigh and Muhyddin Yassin in securing the required nominations for the no.1 and no. 2 posts in the party's national polls in December.
In an immediate reaction, Razaleigh was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying: "This handover thing is unconstitutional and it is not something that should be passed down from one leader to another".
The Kelantan prince has been seemingly on a lone crusade to challenge Abdullah for UMNO's top post. Support for him has so far been lukewarm at best.
On the other hand the fight for the deputy president's post was, until Abdullah's announcement, turning out to be very interesting with Muhyddin's camp pressing his case behind the scenes.... selanjutnya.
