Support on the streets for new Perlis MB

KANGAR: More than 20 banners have sprung up at various locations here in support of Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail’s decision to appoint Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu as the new Mentri Besar of Perlis.

It is not known immediately who put up these banners at strategic locations in the town, such as at roundabouts, near mosques and entrances to residential areas. The little state created headlines with the Raja of Perlis rejecting the Barisan Nasional’s choice of Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, and appointing instead Dr Md Isa.

Former MB Shahidan had however received a letter of appointment to be Mentri Besar from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

In a statement, the Ruler said Md Isa’s appointment was in accordance with Article 39(2) of the Laws of the Constitution of Perlis, which required him to appoint someone who commanded the trust of the majority of the members of the state assembly to become Mentri Besar and head the state executive council.
