Assemblyman under ISA detention adamant that he be sworn-in before Sultan

NST - Newly-elected Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan, who is now been held at the Kamunting detention centre under the Internal Security Act, is adamant that he be sworn in at the Selangor state legislative assembly.
He said although Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar had given the green light for him to be sworn in at the centre in the presence of the state legislative speaker, doing so would be an insult to the Sultan of Selangor.

“Failure for an assemblyman to appear before the assembly is clearly an act of disrespect to the Ruler of the State,” he said in a statement today. "I will never act in contravention of the legislative rules or be rude to the Ruler,” he added.

Syed Hamid announced on March 28 that Manohan would not be the first politician to be sworn in at the detention centre and that having him appear in person at the legislative assembly to take his oath was unnecessary. more...
