KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 15, 2008): Police say the four young children who were victims of the "Kampung Baru" molester could not identify the two suspects rounded up here last week.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Ismail Omar said DNA samples of the suspects' DNA have been sent for match test with evidence collected during the probe on the abduction, sexual assault and murder of eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jamsari last year.
"We are still investigating if they are involved but if there is no evidence to implicate them, then we will have to release them. The children could not identify them as their abusers," he told a press conference after receiving RM260,000 worth of Eye Glo Plus (eye drops) from CCM Bhd in Bukit Aman today.
The two men aged 32 and 43 were arrested last Wednesday and Thursday (Jan 9 and 10) in separate locations here after they apppeared to resemble a photofit of the "Kampung Baru" child molester released by police.
On the dozens of crank calls received by police and the family of Sharlinie Mohd Nashar, he said it was very unbecoming of such individuals to indulge in such acts when the race to find the victim is so intense.
"This is so very irresponsible. At a time when when the whole nation is worried and is hoping the girl is found quickly, we have such people who want to play a fool and thwart our efforts. That is why we had to act by arresting them. Let this be a warning that police will not hesitate to act sternly on those who try to do such things," he added.
