HONG KONG: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said it is a shame for the Malaysian government to dissolve the Parliament to make a way for the early general elections before he is qualified to contest.
Anwar, who is currently in Hong Kong said: “It is unprecedented as Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition is controlling two-thirds of the seats in the Parliament and it has ruled for only three and a half year but is calling for an election before its five-year term is up.
“The only reason is, the government wants to deny me my opportunity to contest in the elections.”
As Anwar was sentenced to jail for corruption, he could not contest in the elections before April this year.
Anwar said in a press conference held by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) on Wednesday (13 Feb): “It is a shame for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to dissolve the Parliament at this moment.”
He hoped PKR could grab at least 25 seats in the upcoming general elections. He added that if the elections is fair enough, the three major opposition parties could win many seats.
He pointed out that: “The so-called general elections is not fair and free. Malaysian media has no right to know and the voter list is still being questioned. Besides, there are still many phantom voters.”
Anwar wondered that the election result will favour the ruling coalition as numerous mistakes in the postal ballots and thousands of voters who were over 100 years old were found in some constituencies.
He added that one of the PKR candidates who is going to win in the upcoming elections will resign later so he can contest in the by- election. (Sin Chew Daily)
